Cedar Rapids falls to Xavier 53-45

CEDAR RAPIDS — Kaylee Gibney clutched the royal blue state-qualifier banner and said to nobody in particular:
“What do I do with this thing?”

Cedar Rapids Xavier advanced to state for the fifth consecutive year by defeating Cedar Rapids Washington, 53-45, in a Class 4A regional final girls’ basketball game last night at the U.S. Cellular Center.
“It feels marvelous to move up to 4A, still be competitive and still be successful,” said Xavier Coach Tom Lilly.
Xavier qualified the last four years as a 3A school.
As the 13th-ranked Saints (15-8) celebrated, a fan shouted, “Now let’s go shock the world!”
Xavier will meet No. 1 Linn-Mar in a state quarterfinal at 1 p.m. next Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The Lions (23-0) handled Cedar Rapids Jefferson last night, 53-30.
Xavier lost to the Lions twice in the regular season but played them as evenly as anyone.
“We’re excited,” said Colleen Bouchard, who led the Saints with 13 points. “We’re going to go out there, play hard and make them earn it.”
The Saints prevailed despite losing Caitlin Kray early to a shoulder injury. They did so behind splendid free-throw shooting (21 of 24). And they did so because of tremendous bench play — Xavier enjoyed a 17-0 advantage in bench points.
Alex Saxen scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed a key steal in the final minute with the Warriors (14-8) within two points and owning momentum.
“I was just anticipating the pass, playing Xavier basketball,” Saxen said.
Bouchard was fouled and made both free throws with 0:42 left to push the lead to 47-43. Gibney hit two foul shots, then Saxen hit four in a row to ice the outcome.
Saxen played a lot early in the season, saw her minutes dwindle somewhat, then played a key role Tuesday.
“I just wanted a chance to prove myself again,” she said.
Saxen’s layup gave Xavier a 41-31 lead early in the fourth quarter, but back-to-back baskets by Renesa Smith-Taylor allowed the Warriors to creep within 45-43 with 1:50 to go. Washington had a chance to tie, but Saxen’s steal shifted the pendulum Xavier’s way for good.
The Warriors had qualified for state four straight years.
“I guess we’ll have to buy a ticket this year,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell.
“The two halves were (opposites). The first half, we defended well and had trouble scoring. The second half, we had more rhythm offensively and gave up too many second-effort plays.”
Washington’s Camille Marie-Lidd led all players with 17 points.
Xavier led, 12-7, after one quarter. The Warriors opened the second period with an 8-2 run to take their first — and only — lead. The Saints closed the half with a 12-2 surge and led, 26-17, at intermission.

CEDAR RAPIDS --- The Cedar Falls girls came up short in a Mississippi Valley Conference showdown with Cedar Rapids Washington Tuesday, 54-42.

Alissa Oney nailed three shots from beyond the arc to lead the Warriors (9-5, 8-3) with 17 points.

Laura Johnson led the Tigers with 16 points, while Courtney Dryer dropped in four 3-pointers.

Cedar Falls (4-9, 3-7) dropped in seven baskets from long range.

Smith-Taylor, Maried-Lidd propel Warriors

CEDAR RAPIDS — Either way, a winning streak was destined to die.

It was evident early that it wouldn't be the one enjoyed by Cedar Rapids Washington.

The Class 4A 14th-ranked Warriors led from wire to wire and routed No. 6 Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 76-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls' basketball game last night at Kennedy High School. It was the Warriors' 10th straight win over the Cougars.

"I think this was the most energized we've been all season," said Washington Coach Frank Howell. "We had lost some close games recently, and we had a sense of urgency."

Washington (8-4 overall, 7-3 MVC) had lost its previous three games by a total of nine points and took out its frustrations on an extremely sluggish Kennedy outfit.

"We really wanted to out-hustle them and let our defense create some offense," said point guard Renesa Smith-Taylor, who posted 17 points and nine assists. "We got a lot of fast breaks off our steals and blocks."

Kennedy (8-3, 7-3) watched a six-game winning streak come to a harsh end. The Cougars committed 28 turnovers, 20 in the first half.

Cougars Coach Dennis Roloff had none of them, but took the blame nonetheless.

"My fault," he said. "We should have had a shootaround today. I should have brought them in, no matter how cold it was outside. We played like we were in bed all day. No desire. No intensity. My fault."

The teams combined for 22 turnovers in a first quarter that ended with the Warriors in front, 15-10.

Washington snapped out of it and pulled away. A 9-0 run midway through the second period made it 33-17, and Ashley Piper's 3-pointer at the second-quarter horn gave the Warriors a 38-21 lead at intermission.

The Warriors opened the second half with an 12-3 surge to open a 26-point lead, and the Cougars never got closer than 17.

Washington's Camille Marie-Lidd got Kennedy all-stater Jade Rogers into early foul trouble and finished with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Post partner Tia Dawson added 17 points.

"We worked a lot over the summer on getting our posts stronger," Marie-Lidd said. "Physically and mentally, both."

Alissa Oney tacked on 11 points for the winners.

Mariah Duke paced Kennedy with 15 points. Rogers added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Washington is at Moline (Ill.) today. Kennedy is at Clinton on Tuesday.
