Roundtree, Oney spark Warrior victory

WATERLOO — Alissa Oney hit four 3-pointers and Latasha Roundtree helped spark a big third-quarter as the No. 6 ranked Washington Warriors overcame No. 10 Waterloo West, 65-42, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls’ basketball game at the Wahawk Gym.

Oney finished with a team-high 14 points and Roundtree, a 5-foot-6 junior, had 12 points, three assists and two steals. The Warriors (2-0, 2-0 MVC) overcame a sluggish start to outscore Waterloo West 22-12 in the decisive third frame. Washington led 45-36 after three quarters, erasing a 24-23 halftime deficit.

West senior Jadyn Spencer led all scorers with 24 points. Jordan Johnston added 10 points. Spencer, a First Team All-Mississippi Valley Conference selection a year ago, won a battle with Washington’s 6-2 senior center Tia Dawson, who had eight points after getting into early foul trouble.

Waterloo West (1-1, 1-1) hit just 1-of-12 3-point shots and overall was 16-for-41 shooting (39 percent). The Warriors attempted a whopping 35 3-pointers, hitting eight (23 percent) and were 25-for-73 (34 percent) overall. Washington connected on 6-for-11 from the foul line (54 percent) and Waterloo West was 6-for-16 (37 percent).

Washington outrebounded Waterloo West, 36-28, and forced the hosts into 22 turnovers. The Warriors committed 12 turnovers and had five blocked shots. Dawson had four.

Washington outscored Waterloo West 42-18 in the second half, including 20-6 in the final quarter.

The Warriors play at Moline, Ill., Saturday. Waterloo West plays at Waverly-Shell Rock.

Washington won the sophomore game, 52-15.
